What is 3D Secure?

Developing and spreading compound and communication technologies have made the internet an indispensable part of our lives in the past decades. Following the increasing opportunity to access the internet, playing games online, chatting with friends, browsing social networking sites, having the ability to access any information we want at any time, being able to access current news from internet media that provides 24/7 service unlike printed newspapers and magazines, and shopping through the internet are among the most important uses of the internet. Since 1995, the internet has been offered for more frequent commercial use. Recently, the internet has attracted attention with its e-commerce dimension and has revealed a new form of shopping. Online shopping has become widespread among consumers and as a result has brought new dynamics to companies and marketing. One of the biggest reasons for the ever-expanding commercial volume and popularity of e-commerce is that it provides benefits to all participants.

When considered from the consumer's perspective, it offers fast, easy, and more affordable shopping because it eliminates intermediaries such as wholesalers, retailers, and sometimes carriers. When considered from the seller's perspective, it is a sales and marketing method that provides significant savings because it eliminates problems such as physical space, staffing, and inventory costs. Security always stands out as one of the most important issues of electronic commerce. Establishing mutual trust, which is essential for commerce, is very important for both parties. The uneasiness created by online shopping, which parties are just beginning to get used to, cannot be ignored. On the other hand, there are also dangers brought by the internet network being open to everyone. In some situations, verification of the identities of the receiver and sender may be encountered during data transmission and protection of data confidentiality on networks. In e-commerce, there is also a risk of credit card information, etc., that consumers have to transmit to make purchases from sites, being stolen while being transmitted over the internet. However, the risk of credit card information falling into others' hands in e-commerce has been largely eliminated. In e-commerce, buyers and sellers do not see each other, and more measures may need to be taken to ensure mutual trust. First of all, buyer and seller parties want to verify each other's identities. Companies providing virtual shopping services commonly use the 3D Secure system to ensure the security and confidentiality of credit card information.

How Does 3D Secure Work?

3D Secure is a security method preferred by almost all major e-commerce sites today. This method is intended to prevent things like fraud and theft. Those using 3D Secure seem to have achieved this. Even if your credit card information is captured by a fraudster or thief, it prevents shopping from your card. When we talk about online payment, in simple terms, an e-commerce site is entered, a product is selected, added to the cart, and after entering card information, a code is sent to your mobile phone, this code is entered, and the payment is completed. Some sites make the 3D Secure system mandatory. Some do not integrate 3D Secure at all. Some sites offer it as an option. hepsiburada.com can be given as an example. When you don't choose 3D Secure, payment is made directly from the card, and no message is sent to your phone. When we choose 3D Secure, a message containing a code is sent to your phone, and the code is entered to complete the payment securely. On the other hand, 3D Secure does not request payment for products below a certain amount because the money amount is insignificant when it is low. This way, it leaves the liability to you. E-commerce sites may even be determining the secure payment money limit on a customer basis. The process between modules of 3D Secure superficially works as follows. For example, when you choose secure payment while making a payment and it is an expensive product, the information collected by the 3DSRequestor at the member merchant is transmitted from the 3DSServer to the relevant DS server.

The DS transmits the information to the ACS according to the card range. At this point, the ACS communicates with the bank and makes a verification request from the bank. This time, a challenge request is made to the ACS by the 3DSRequestor, and a verification screen is created by the ACS. To understand that the person entering the card information is really the customer, a coded message is sent to the phone by the bank. The code entered by the user on the opened screen is checked by the ACS and approved. The result is sent to the DS and to the 3DSRequestor in the Acquirer Domain section. Shopping is completed safely.

Why is 3D Secure Important

3D Secure is of great importance whether you are a seller or a buyer. When examined from the seller's side, if you don't use 3D Secure, your system will not be completely secure. Therefore, when you encounter any fraud on your site, when a user of yours becomes a victim of this situation, you may also suffer from it. Because the victimized user can sue you. On the other hand, if they don't sue, the user may want to return or cancel the product ordered by the fraudster. Also, your site and brand may create doubt about prestige and reliability. When other users hear this news, you may lose customers noticeably. This also leads to lost sales and financial loss. When the subject is considered from the customer's perspective, in an environment where 3D Secure technology is not used, the old method of 128-bit encryption will probably be used. Actually, it may not be right to call this method an insecure method. However, it is a method with a major security vulnerability. Your credit card information can be captured by third parties, and if this is serious fraud, you may not even know about it.

In such a situation, malicious people can shop from your card as they wish and leave you facing serious financial losses. The last situation is when your phone is hacked. In this case, the person who hacked your phone directly catches the coded message coming with 3D Secure and uses it and deletes it from your phone. In this case, you are also responsible for the software security of your phone. Also, there are remote locking and control technologies on phones against the risk of physical theft. By installing these technologies on your phone, you can lock and control your phone remotely when it is stolen.

Using 3D Secure Correctly and Effectively

The situation where the required password does not reach the user is usually due to not providing the correct phone number to your bank. You need to check your phone number(s) registered with the bank and be sure they are correct. Also, some banks may send the coded password not to your phone number but to your email address or as a notification from their own mobile banking application. On the other hand, the situation where the page does not work correctly is also frequently encountered. Although you write the password given to you by 3D Secure, the shopping may not be completed. This is known to generally be due to two situations. The first problem may be related to your browser. Some browsers cannot run 3D Secure correctly, and as a result, this error is encountered.

In this case, try to complete your shopping with another browser. The second reason is about not opening your card to internet banking. In this case, 3D Secure, which is the final approval process, does not work correctly, and shopping is not completed. You need to contact your bank and have your card opened to online shopping. Sometimes users also encounter situations where the 3D Secure page does not open or opens incorrectly. In these cases, the 3D Secure page opens as a pop-up. And if you are using a pop-up blocker, the 3D Secure page is not displayed correctly. Turn off your pop-up blocker and try to complete your shopping that way. Another reason may be related to your browser.
